Maximise the impact of your questions by tracking how and when you ask them

Questions are central to the practice of coaching. As coaches we know how we should be using questions, but how well are we doing it in practice? It’s notoriously difficult to hold and objective view of our practice without reviewing transcripts or video of sessions, but this is a time-consuming task, and gives no sense of how we are doing relative to other coaches, or our previous sessions.

Ovida brings objectivity and context to self-reflection and review of sessions by enabling coaches and supervisors to rapidly review transcript of video of all question moments in a single interactive interface.

This week, we added two important new question metrics.

Question rate measures frequently the coach asks questions. Too many? Too few? Just right? That is up to you. But knowing this metric and being able to benchmark your session against your own history and that of other coaches helps you deepen your understanding of this important coaching skill.

Open question ratio helps coaches understand the proportion of their questions that are open. The right ration will depend on the coach, the client, and the context of the session. But having visibility of this metric has been shown to significantly improve how coaches consciously use their questions.
